About the Author

Elizabeth (Liz) Bockelman was born in 1955, in the small town of Rochelle, Illinois. She earned a BFA from the University of Illinois at Champaign Urbana. My 2 year old loved the story of KaBoom! He enjoyed picking out colors, and enjoyed hearing the rythmic words. I found it easy to read, and emphasize words I thought would make it interesting for him. I love that this a book he can grow into. I also like the way it is laid out. I can easily choose to read him the story, or a history page depending on how the crazy bedtime routine goes! It also has helped him not be so nervous when a neighbor starts their firework celebration a little before the holiday!

This book is exciting to read to the little ones. I love the historical descriptions and reading the last pages. This book is for kids of all ages. Even grandparents. The book is beautifully illustrated. I can't wait for future books by Liz Bockelman'

This a great children's book about so many things beyond just the 4th of July. It's about inclusion and differences and value in diversity. Looking forward to the next book in the series.

A handbook for blended families that offers some substantive advice, based on a 10-year longitudinal study by Bray, presented with the help of Kelly (co-author, The Secret Life of an Unborn Child, not reviewed). As a clinical psychologist, Bray (Family Medicine/Baylor Coll. of Medicine) worked frequently with stepfamilies and knew that up to 60 percent of second marriages that include stepchildren do not succeed. With funding from the National Institutes of Health, he recruited 200 families--all Texas-based, generally white and middle or working class, with a biological mother and a stepfather as the family core--in a search for information about why this is so. He found each family unique in its struggle to create a close-knit and loving home but was able to identify three general categories and three stages that predict the degree of success. The categories are the Neotraditional family, where husbands and wives emphasize the relationship rather than themselves; the Romantic family, least likely to succeed because expectations are unrealistic; and the Matriarchal family, where the mother is highly competent and dominant. All stepfamilies, whatever their type, follow a pattern of ups and downs, according to Bray. As with a first marriage, the first two years, when children and adults are sorting out their relationships and coming to terms with shadows of the first marriages, are the hardest. The next three or four years are more tranquil as compromises have been made, but the third cycle can see stress and conflict again, as children and parents endure adolescence. One major obstacle to the emerging stepfamily: stepparents who move too quickly to take over the parental role. Detailed and evocative case histories illuminate discussions of these various landmarks in stepfamilies lives, including the sometimes disruptive but vital role of former spouses. Good book with some great insights and expectation setting that I found very useful. This book is quite dated though and, as the author states, focuses on the step father role, but also is based on old custody norms. It'd be interesting to see a study on the 50/50 parenting split and how that impacts the step family.I found some of the perspectives on women very dated and the need to describe a woman's looks in detail quite offensive... How attractive a woman is or isn't has no bearing on the step family dynamic and is irrelevant. As with all things, take in the good and leave the bad. All in all i recommend this book for new step families.

Very will written book! The author digs deep into the whys of the way people work to explain very viable hypotheses. I enjoy the imagery and story telling the most.

Excellent book for a new stepparent, female or male. The findings are very applicable to a new family and it helps manage expectations and pitfall to watch out for. Great book!

It is a great book to read if involve in a stepfamily.

Combined family, I have 4 kids, so does he. YIKES! We sure were struggling. This book not only gave me hope, but many solutions! I was seriously on the verge of walking out the door. The book is WAY more affordable than therapy.

As a step mom and psychotherapist, this book has been so helpful. I wish my husband and I had read it prior to blending our families. It is well-written, practical and therapeutic. I would recommend this book to anyone connected to, or obviously in, a step family. I particularly recommend it to therapists and those entering a step family -- read it before you make that step, it will help you think about and discuss things you may not have already!

This book is a must have for anyone entering into or already in a step family situation. The book distills longitudinal research on 200 families and breaks the results into easily understandable tasks for healthy development of the step family. Highly recommend.
