PLATO IV expanded the horizons of being an on-campus system in the 1960s to a far-reaching networked system in the early 1970s. In 1973 and 1974 alone, interactive chat, screen sharing, person notes (email), notesfiles (topic discussion groups), multi-player networked games, animated text graphics (animated emojis), graphic logon pages (Goodle search page), and more all provided a social dimension much broader than just being used for training.“The Friendly Orange Glow” (TFOG) details the culture in which this environment thrived; the culture led by Don Bitzer and supported by the creative team at the University of Illinois. (Or, if you knew of the Xwindows systems of the 1980s, weren’t they developed there?)Wasn’t networked computer-based training (CBT) first done using MOOCs in the 2000s? No. The first time-sharing use of a computer was developed for PLATO in the early 1960s.John Brunner published my favorite read, “The Shockwave Rider” in 1975. I re-read it every few years and remain astounded at how forward looking it was, describing a twenty-first century world dominated by computer networks, hackers, cyber crime, and more. I don’t know whether Brunner ever saw or knew about the PLATO system, but the book also describes aspects of what PLATO was at the time in the early 1970s and what it could have become. The Internet has become that network. It first existed on the PLATO network.You can still SEE and TOUCH the PLATO system live on the Internet. You can still use Notes, talkomatic, term-talk, and play the multitude of interactive games. Every Sunday evening, there is a pickup game in Empire. You might even see me there, though I tend to get killed a lot.Guanogap is also there for you to read and experience.

I worked at CERL in the early 1970's during the PLATO IV development, and have eagerly anticipated this book for several years. In storytelling fashion, Brian Dear has laid out the intrigues, adventures, successes and disappointments covering a span of more than 50 years. The book is a masterpiece in illuminating the cultural context and inputs to PLATO, its history and development, its contributions to our modern technical and social networking environment, and also, the end, tinged as it is in tragedy. Later on the two finally meet again and they both feel as though there is a connection there. I loved getting to see the way Austin and Liz’s story flows. The struggles that Liz has growing up with parents that see Classism. The way the Austin is there to support her in her new adventures and showing Liz that what her parents want doesn’t have to be what she wants.The story is well written, emotional, funny but so full of love!

Wow, rich girl, not so rich boy, meet, in an oh so unusual way. What a unique connection Austin and Liv feel, not quite understanding it. There is so much emotion, connection, fire, intense conversations, busy schedules, the two will have one wild, fun journey.❤️Enjoy, I certainly loved it.

Austin was a great character --- sweet, consideŕate, sexy, a rocker, and intelligent. Liz was needy but intelligent. Not a terribly realistic plot, but it kept me reading. Well written.

3.5 STARS!!!Open Your Heart was a good romance read. Elizabeth (Liz) comes from a very rich and prestigious family and Austin is the man from the wrong side of the tracks following his dream to be a Rockstar. Austin and Liz have a connection that's undeniable and their relationship is one they know will be hard but they can't deny the attraction they feel. I enjoyed the two of them together, although there were times I wanted to shake Liz and tell her to stop acting so childish. Their story was a sweet one with not too much drama but I wish there was more angst. I absolutely loved Austin and his mom. I also enjoyed Liz and her sisters Emily (EmVee) and Madeline (Maddie). There were parts I really enjoyed about the story and parts that were okay. I wish that the flow was a little faster in certain parts of the story but overall this was a good read. This story ends with a cliffhanger leaving readers wanting to know what happened with Maddie and Trent.

He is rockin’ roll, but not really a bad boy. She has family wealth, but isn’t a snobby socialite. Her world is falling apart and by chance fate throws them in each other’s path a second time. His hard work is finally starting to pay off and her’s is falling through her fingers making her feel like she might drowned. Can he help keep her afloat while guiding her to another path or will their families cause another Romeo and Juliet?

Liz is an aspiring surgeon when a bad car accident changes the course of her life and ends her career. Austin comes to her aid anonymously, and he has an up and coming musical career, and is looking for the big break for his band. Six months later Liz’s sister takes her out to see a band, and she meets Austin for the first time. The chemistry between them is intense. This is a well written story. Which had me hooked and intrigued throughout this addictive page turner, and I look forward to reading more of this talented authors’ work!

I am using this book as part of my 2nd grade curriculum. We build a city in my classroom. This book inspired me to make our city sustainable this year. The students were really inspired by this story especially since it is told through the eyes of a child.

Real story for teamwork

7 year old grandson loves the book

When a tornado completely wiped out Greensboro, KS, the town decided to capitalize on the green part of their name and rebuild as green as possible. They rebuilt homes that would conserve energy and water, use natural resources, and incorporated reclaimed and recycled materials as much as possible.An interesting true story about recovery from a natural disaster and various different approaches families and companies took to go green. I like the practical ways kids are encouraged to save energy. I grew up in a unique atmosphere as my dad is a heating and cooling engineer so he taught us from the time we were little several of these techniques to save energy, and to make sure your house is more energy efficient. I never took the time to think before about how most kids don't learn such things from their fathers. This is a good book for those kids who don't grow up with heating/cooling engineer fathers.

About the Author

Dirk Pfeiffer graduated in Veterinary Medicine in Germany in 1984. He obtained his PhD in Veterinary Epidemiology from Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand in 1994. He has worked as an academic in New Zealand until accepting a professorship in veterinary epidemiology at the Royal Veterinary College in 1999. His particular interest is the epidemiology and control of infectious diseases, and his technical expertise includes field epidemiological and ecological research methods, advanced epidemiological analysis, spatial and temporal analysis of epidemiological data, risk analysis, computer modelling of animal disease, animal health economics and development of animal health information systems. Dirk provides scientific expertise to various organizations including the European Food Safety Authority, Defra, the Food and Agriculture Organization, as well as various international governments. Timothy Robinson graduated from the University of Oxford with a degree in pure and applied biology in 1988. His PhD, at the University of Reading, was on the ecology of the African armyworm, and involved extensive fieldwork in Kenya. After his doctorate he went on to work in Zambia (1992-1996) as a field ecologist, providing technical support to the Regional Tsetse and Trypanosomiasis Control Programme. This was followed by a stint of research at the University of Oxford (1996-1999), as a zoology research fellow and a fellow of Linacre College. From 1999-2002 he was employed as a scientist at the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) in Nairobi, again working on diseases of livestock. From ILRI, Timothy moved to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation, where he currently works in the Livestock Information, Sector Analysis and Policy Branch. Mark Stevenson is senior lecturer in veterinary epidemiology at Massey University, Palmerston North New Zealand. He received his PhD in veterinary epidemiology in 2003 from Massey University. Dr. Stevenson was awarded the Chris Baldock Prize for Early Career Researcher from the Australian Biosecurity Cooperative Research Centre in 2006 and is a member of the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists. After completing an MSc in Agriculture in 1995 Kim Stevens worked for the Veterinary Faculty of the University of Pretoria (South Africa), first as a Technical Assistant in the Department of Veterinary Physiology and then as a Senior Technical Assistant for the Equine Research Centre. She moved to England in 2000, and joined the Royal Veterinary College in 2002 as a Clinical Research Assistant. David Rogers is Professor of Ecology in Oxford University. His interests include population ecology of pests and vectors of disease, mathematical modelling, epidemiology and the application of remotely sensed environmental data to conservation and epidemiology/epizootiology.Archie Clements graduated with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science degree from the University of Sydney in 1996. He then spent two years working in veterinary practice before undertaking an internship and concurrent Masters degree in Veterinary Medicine at the University of Glasgow; going on to study a PhD in veterinary epidemiology at the Royal Veterinary College, University of London, starting in October 2000. His thesis focussed on the application of new spatial analytical methods to decision-making and resource-allocation in veterinary diseases. He spent two years working as an epidemiologist at Imperial College London before moving to the School of Population Health, University of Queensland, where he is currently employed as a Senior Lecturer in epidemiology.

The Preface to this book says that "... a basic understanding of epidemiology and statistics is assumed." If you think that basis statistics = a one year course, you would be quite wrong. Just looking at the beginning of the book's index, you would find: additive logistic model, Akaike's information criterion, autoregressive model, Breusch-Pagan test, discriminant analysis, empirical Bayes, and Fourier processing. None of these concepts is explained.Amazon indicates that this book contains 209 pages. Readers should be aware, however, that there are only 119 pages of actual text. I was stunned when I received the book. After paying over $40, it seemed overly expensive.These caveats aside, the book is pretty well written, although with a skew toward veterinary rather than human epidemiological concens.

A very good book and very easy to read. It is a good introduction to spatial analysis, statistic is exhaustive although somewhat superficial, and the examples are good. Black and white maps are a problem during reading, although this was solved with the same maps in color in the middle of the book. I am interested in the spatial analisis of the diagnostic lab data and the book has been a good help.

HEALTH PLANNERS WILL FIND THE METHODOLOGIES PRESENTED IN THIS BOOK THE BEST SHORTCUT FOR MAKING CONCLUSIONS ON THE RELATIOSHIPS BETWEEN ENVIRONMENT AND HEALTH IN A GIVEN PLACE.

This book includes more types of spatial analyses than I have previously seen under one roof, so to speak. However, it does not cover any analyses in detail, nor does it provide any worked examples! As a consequence, this book is not appropriate for those who are new to spatial stats or who need some practical experience with them. For practitioners who are already familiar with basic spatial analyses (e.g. Moran's I, semivariance), then the book offers some related methods and does a nice job of concisely summarizing and comparing different tests.

This book is a great start to the topic of spatial epidemiology. We read it as a required text for a Masters in Epi Geospatial Epidemiology course. The first couple of chapters are great, but the statistical definitions of some concepts are too vague for a researcher learning to apply new methods.

Born in East Tennessee, Nick Sullivan has spent most of his adult life as an actor in New York City, working in theater, television, film, and audiobooks. Deep Shadow has it all – Suspense, Thriller, Terrorists, and even a little spark of love? If you’re not familiar with Sullivan’s work as a fiction author – that’s because you missed one of the most enjoyable books I read in the last few years – Zombie Bigfoot. But, you might know Sullivan because he’s been an audiobook narrator for hundreds of titles in a ton of genres.A tale about a SCUBA instructor and divemaster who sees something that he shouldn’t have – and is taken for a ride into the deep and dark world of narco subs and a terrorist plot?First and foremost – you can tell that this is a love-letter to the Caribbean. Sullivan is obviously a fan (which he does state at the end of the book) of the culture, climate, and diving in the Caribbean. I can also tell that a ton of research (and non-fiction elements) went into Deep Shadow. The way he described each island and each dive that they made is painted in this amazing color that I felt like I was there. I’ve only ever been to Jamaica and I’ve never SCUBA’d before (outside of once in the high school pool). But I felt like I was on these dives with the characters. Sullivan’s expertise allowed me to live it instead of just feel like I was watching it from ashore.The narco sub that he talks about that plays a major role in the entire novel – weaving itself in and out – hiding in the shadows is based on a real sub – he mentions this at the end of the book too, but I remember hearing about a narco sub that was found in the rivers of South American a couple years ago and I thought that was the craziest thing. I love when an author can weave non-fiction elements (adding to them as they please) with fiction. It makes the story even more believable.The best part about Deep Shadow is that everything felt incredibly plausible. So much so that I felt like we should be watching out for terrorist plots similar to what Sullivan wrote about. It felt that real. The characters were likable and easy to root for (especially Boone) – you just wanted them to do well and to come out on top.Overall, Deep Shadow will probably be up there with my Best of 2018 books. I can say this – I hope that Sullivan has more books in this series planned – and I hope that they are all as good as Deep Shadow was. Nick, go back to one of these islands and get inspired for another novel!

First off, I loved this book and recommend it highly. It is a complete page-turner. Loved the characters. Loved the setting. Loved the story.But I do have a confession to make. I'm that guy who had no idea that Bonaire, or Saba, or most of the islands even referenced in this book, existed. I mean, I know where Venezuela is, but alas, geography was never my strong suit. And as far as scuba diving is concerned, I did it once in Hawaii, but that was a long time ago and I didn't see a whole lot.But NOW?! Sign me up for a scuba vacation to the Caribbean baby! The descriptions were so vivid and inviting I felt like I was there! Not that the descriptions themselves are important, but it does illustrate how fully immersed you become in the author's world. And the character's are likewise fully brought to life. I loved the characters, especially Boone. (In my next life I'm going to be him: just a dude who finds something he loves to do - and does it.) I thought the villains particularly believable, which is important in a story like this. And Ana Munoz is the gift that keeps on giving... you should read this book if only to meet her, she is worth the price of admission, believe me. (And she is, alas, not even a main character.)I don't want to give anything away but I will tell you I found the twists and turns in the plot kept me guessing. I'm the guy who usually sees stuff coming a mile away, but I am happy to say that I was genuinely surprised, and can honestly tell youI did not see where it was going - in the most satisfactory way. Well done sir.I guess the best compliment I can give this book is that I finished it in an afternoon. I picked it up and couldn't put it down.Oh, and can I just make one request? Hurry up with the sequel - and Ana Munoz needs her own series. Please.

Deep Shadow by Nick Sullivan is a sexy, espionage filled romp through the waters of the Caribbean and the islands upon it. Like the fishing vessels that become the travel of our heroes, this book will hook you and keep you hooked throughout. I was immediately drawn into the Clancy-esque storyline, but was equally turned on by the romance at the center. Props to this writer for giving us both a male and female heroine, and a romance that works within and amplifies the storyline. A delicious, sexy, action packed maritime adventure that will keep you turning the pages well into the night! Clear the writer knows this territory well, and loves it-- you will find yourself infused with the passion of his writing. I only wish I had been on the beach reading it, but he transported me there in spirit! **I received an advance reader copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I can't stand to fly without a decent book to read during the long boring airport waits and flights. So, I pulled this one down to the Kindle as insurance from boredom on my way to Statia and Saba for Sea & Learn and some great diving. I had no idea "Deep Shadow" would also take me to these beautiful places. Being a frequent visitor to these islands myself, I really enjoyed the detailed descriptions of the people and places I know well. In fact, I would not be surprised to find out I have meet Nick Sullivan at some point in my travels. I probably dived with him! Anyway, very well written book, great beach read, and I loved the sprinkling of historical and geographic facts. I will be pulling down the second book in the series now!

While I am not a reviewer of any note, I am an avid reader of all things ‘adventure’. As such, just let me state that Mr. Sullivan’s novel fulfilled what I consider elemental in any good story: Plot construction, character development and pace. I was hooked from the outset and can only anticipate his next adventure in paradise. As an old sailor and diver who knows a bit about the Caribbean, I can only say to Wayne Stinnett, “thanks for the introduction”. It’s nice to have a “new friend”.
