I loved the first two books but I can't really say that about this one. Before you crucify me, hear me out. Ren and Della's story was fraught with sadness but we also caught glimpses of sweet and tender moments that made their books somehow easier to bear. Jacob's story didn't have any sweet moments and frankly, I didn't really like him all that much. I think Della did him a disservice by not getting him help after his father died. Instead, she let him act out and become anti-social. It's obvious he was affected deeply by his father's illness/death and did not handle it well. I get that Della was grieving over losing Ren but she promised him she would take care of Jacob and I really don't think she did. I don't know how Hope could hold on to loving Jacob for so long when she got nothing back. He basically treated her like dirt and she kept coming back for more. I'm sad that the story wasn't what I had expected and I had a hard time finishing it. I was left feeling kind of blah.
If I could give this book more than 5 stars.. I would definately do just that!Jacobs story is so full of angst and fear! Who knew that a promise he made at 10 years old would make him so afraid! I could feel his pain in the writing! Pepper Winters is a master of this! Every word, every feeling... just resonates with me and I feel like I’mart of the story.Parts of this made me laugh...parts made me, not gonna lie, sob.. parts made me want to smack him, but the most prevalent thing for me as loving him. Loving Hope was easier... feeling her pain.. more difficult.I am always stunned with how I can be thrown into the world of the characters Pepper Winters has created. How she makes me want to dive right in. I can’t help it! I talk to the characters while I’m reading.. that can be embarrassing.. I feel like part of the book. I had a very hard time putting this one down. I read most of it in one day.Do I recommend this book? 100% yes! Every single person should read this set. I’ve already recommended it to those around me that I know read. I’ve gifted them to others. It’s worthevery single second it takes to read it. I promise
Pepper, Pepper, Pepper....what your words do to me. They leave me curled up in a blubbering heap unable to focus on anything else. No matter how dark or how painful the story-line, you make me root for a happily ever after even though the main character wants to not be loved, is cruel and impatient and cruel (yes I said that twice). Jacob, despite his cruelty to all around him (not necessarily physically but emotionally distant), pulls on your heartstrings and makes you want him to let go, to let others in, to be happy. We just know that he doesn't have that in him that he holds his pain close and nearly revels in it, being proven right over and over again but wanting to be proven wrong with his next breath. Ren and Della have seriously imprinted on this man and because we know their love story (at least I hope you have read The Boy and His Ribbon and The Girl and her Ren before delving into this story) we expect Jacob to embrace all that is love, but he has demons that are nearly impossible to deal with. Hope has her own demons and deals with them in the complete opposite way which Jacob is not equipped to deal with. This story has all the pain that you might expect, but it may also hold all the beauty that you want.
All it took was the first few pages and I was desperately trying to hold back my tears. Just to see his name ‘Ren Wild’ made me feel like mush. My emotions all over the place, tears running down my face. Boyhow was I going to get through the whole story is this is how I was just at the beginning. More tissues required. No there mandatory for this book.I fell in love with Ren and Della’s story so going into The Son and His Hope I knew what I was getting myself into. The raw emotions that bled through the pages tore me apart. The depth of the story line and the complexity of the characters drew me in. I felt as if I was a voyeur on the sidelines watching it all unfold.Jacob was a tortured soul who forgot how to love the living and enjoy life.This book is so far my top read for 2019 and I think it will be extremely hard for it to be topped. Ren , Della, Jacob and Hope will stay with me for a very long time
