Funny Man: Mel Brooks, by Patrick McGilligan

Review

“This superb account by film biographer McGilligan of Mel Brooks’s life and career persuasively sketches two sides of the comedian-filmmaker’s personality….. McGilligan’s exhaustive biography will be essential reading for anyone interested in Brooks or, more broadly, how Hollywood functioned during the second half of the 20th century.” (Publishers Weekly)“The author ably chronicles Brooks’ career arc from the Brooklyn kid born Melvin Kaminsky to the loudest member of Sid Caesar’s writing staff on NBC’s Your Show of Shows and Caesar’s Hour in the 1950s to the driving force behind some of the most successful film comedies of his time.” (Kirkus Reviews)“Well researched, engaging, and of interest to all of Brooks fans. McGilligan has found a good critical balance as he extols his subject’s comedic and artistic virtues while being forthright about Brooks’s occasional stubborn attitude toward creative and financial control. McGilligan is one of the few film biographers not to indulge in extensive criticism of the projects themselves, instead offering commentary through the contemporary reviews or financial results of a given work.” (Library Journal)“After a career spanning more than 60 years of writing, directing, producing, and acting in movies, TV, and on Broadway, somebody finally wrote the exhaustive biography about the life and career of Mel Brooks. Patrick McGilligan’s Funny Man: Mel Brooks tells the story of a man who has never stopped hustling in an almost pathological pursuit of the twin needs to entertain and be famous for it.” (New York)“Highly detailed....A veteran showbiz biographer, McGilligan has produced a book rich with knowledge of the industry and overflowing with the fruits of his research.” (Newsday)

My high school pal and I sneaked off one Friday night to see “Blazing Saddles.” We were 17, which made us ‘legal’ to get into an R-rated film. It still felt like an act of rebellion. Our parents wouldn’t have approved. The campfire scene alone was worth the ticket, but there was so much more. There’s so much more to Mel Brooks, too, and “Funny Man” is a serious biography about a seriously funny man. Behind the talk-show antics and the big-screen parodies is a self-made entertainer who worked hard to achieve and maintain his standing as one of the most reliable laugh-makers around. If dying is hard and comedy is harder – well, the business of comedy is harder still, if Mel’s career is any example.Fueling Mel’s rise from teenage Brooklyn wiseacre to national clown is an out-size ego. The talent hasn’t always been strong enough to support the ego. His career has had plenty of failures amid the enormous hits. But those hits – “Get Smart” in TV, “The 2,000-Year-Old Man” in recordings, “The Producers” on Broadway and a string of movies _ are pretty darn solid.Comedy isn’t all fun and games, and neither is Mel. He covets credit and at times seems to want more than his fair share. He covets the money that laughter generates and at times seems to want more than his fair share. His first shot at being a husband was a misfire and he wasn’t the best ex-husband either. Tread carefully: Mel is as well-armed with lawyers as he is with humor.(Mel does have an eye for and an appreciation of talent. For example, when no one else would take a chance on young David Lynch, Mel did. Lynch had the freedom to make “The Elephant Man” his way because Mel backed him up.)All this and more make Mel Brooks a real person, not just the character he’s created for our amusement. And author Patrick McGilligan makes “Funny Man” a fascinating read – a well-sourced, painstakingly researched tale of a success that has had plenty of high notes and more than a few sour ones. But I’ll take those laughs any day.

Yes writers are funny men and women, Brooks included, but the Brooks antics, his massive ego, his lack of character and his boorishness is nothing to celebrate.

I loved this book. Author Patrick McGilligan tells a great story of Mel Brooks’s life and career. But the book is more than that; it is also a history of American comedic television. I’m a big Brooks fan and I couldn’t put the book down. But there is a darker side to Brooks that McGilligan also describes that is equally as fascinating as Brooks's comedic side. As a biography in general I think this book is well worth reading. But for anyone familiar with Brooks’s work, it is a must read.Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this book via Edelweiss for review purposes.

First chapter listened to if the remaining are 1/3 as good it will still be the best book of the year. Gtg chapter two is on.

This is a nasty hit job. The author has virtually nothing positive to say about Brooks. He twists every fact, neutral or flattering so as to cast the harshest light on Brooks. On the audiobook, the reader is snide and waspish. Yech.

Undead Girl Gang by Lily Anderson wasn't exactly what I expected, but, damn, if it wasn't great. The leader of the undead girl gang, Mila, isn't undead at all, but a fat, Mexican witch. She is funny and strong while still being vulnerable, with the perfect amount of hope and naivety that keeps her and the story going. I didn't know, when starting this book, that she would mean so much to me, a fat, white, agnostic. Mila's confidence is a thing of beauty. She knows who she is, what she is, and the plot never centers around changing any of it. When Mila's confidence faltered, I felt it with her. When she told people off for the things they said, I cheered for her. She's the perfect balance of real and unreal, showing the readers it's okay not to be perfect while also showing them it's possible to keep going and strive to be better, to be treated better, to attain your goals.I've never read a book with a Wiccan main character and it was really interesting seeing the difference between Wicca and the magic put on the page. As someone without a religion, I find it interesting to dive into someone else's head and see their beliefs and how they inform the character's actions.Anderson does a great job at mixing humor with sadness. When we first meet Mila, she's at her best friend's funeral. And Riley isn't just Mila's best friend; she's her only friend. We feel this loneliness, this loss, even without knowing Riley, because we can all imagine losing the person we're closest with. The undead girls get seven days before they have to return to their graves and, despite knowing this fact, there's still time for shenanigans, which is a great balance to the growing dread of having to say goodbye. The voice and characters are amazing. Anderson made me love the characters Mila despises from their first appearance. The girls are all unique while still managing to be someone you probably know. Their humanization was probably tricky, but Anderson nails it.And I won't get into it too much, but the romance was sooooo good. My heart. Oh, my heart.Lastly, this book has one of my favorite covers ever and I need to get a jean jacket and these pins ASAP.Okay, last lastly, Netflix needs to adapt this please. Thanks.

Mila Flores is alone. She used to have a best friend name Riley and it was always them against the world, being weird and doing magic together. Riley was very recently found drowned in the local creek, ruled as a suicide. Mila doesn't believe it and, after every adult alienates her, she decides to use magic to solve the crime. Her plan was to raise Riley from the dead for a week, but ends up raising two more girls, June and Dayton. They also supposedly killed themselves, but they insist they would never. Now Mila has three zombie teenage girls to hide from the public, provide for, and solve their murders before their week is up.Undead Girl Gang is a surprisingly heartwarming read that also exposes the reality beneath high school cliques and stereotypes. Mila Flores is out of place in her town as a fat, Mexican witch (of sorts). She embraced her otherness with Riley, a kindred spirit rejected because her parents own and live in a funeral home. Popular girls used that to isolate and bully Riley since elementary school. Together, they dabbled in wicca and found true friendship within each other. Since Riley's death, Mila is alone, mistreated by every adult and student around her (except Riley's brother Xander). The other students never accepted her, but the adults truly failed her. The school psychologist is literally no help and her parents force her to return to school two days after her best friend died as punishment for walking out of the sham funeral. She's the only one who doesn't believe that Riley killed herself and rages at all the crocodile tears, fake hand wringing, and cringy show choir tributes that Riley wouldn't like or want. I felt for Mila and admired how as a teen she was able to push through all that to do what she thought was right. The zombies are produced by an elaborate magic ritual from a tome shipped to the abandoned house they practice magic and keep all their supplies in. Three girls are raised from the dead, Riley, June, and Dayton, because of the wiccan rule of three. They look normal while they are within 100 steps of Mila, but revert to their rotted state with whatever injuries they had. As time moves closer to the 7 day deadline, the regenerative powers work less and less. These zombie aren't flesh eating, opting for junk food. They don't really have any special powers and they don't remember much leading up to their deaths, so things aren't going as well as Riley hoped. There's also the huge issue that she can't keep an eye on them at all times. They stole disguises, but they aren't exactly being super secretive as they walk all over the school campus and even yell at their insincere friends. This time together for all of them makes them lower their guard and truly see the other people beneath the clique they belong to. Over time, June and Dayton where no longer just popular and cruel shells. Through a lot of conflict and some good times, Riley, Dayton, June, and Mila all became friends while trying to figure out the murder.Undead Girl Gang shows that even the bully or the loner at school are real people underneath the social expectations and cliques. I found this book incredibly progressive with its sensitive discussion of suicide, the smashing of expectations, and the emphasis on female friendship. This book warmed my heart and impressed me with its different view of magical lore. I would love to see a sequel or really anything else from Lily Anderson.

.For me, this book is worth the purchase price JUST to get the extensive “How to Keto” information at the beginning of the book -- long before you even get to any of the recipes. I got the Kindle download notification shortly after midnight eastern time on release day, and I immediately read it cover to cover (or, rather, the Kindle equivalent of “cover to cover”).This cookbook has the most comprehensive-yet-simplified explanation of keto that I have ever seen. Urvashi Pitre has totally knocked it out of the park here, and has distilled the essence of keto/LCHF down to just the bare bones brass tacks of what it is, how it works, and how to make it work for YOU in the most simple, straightforward, and pain-free manner possible..If you are a beginner, THIS is the resource you want to start with (rather than all those other books and blogs that list overwhelming page after page of do’s and don’ts). Urvashi Pitre’s explanation breaks it down in the simplest of terms so that you can not only know what you need to do, but feel confident in your ability to actually do it.The 4-week plan included in this opening section is exactly the plan I followed when she first created it over a year ago. I’ve now been eating keto/LCHF for 15 months (and am down 70 pounds so far using her recipes and facebook group for guidance and support!) -- yet even after all this time doing it, and succeeding marvelously, I still found this section of the book to be well worth the read.If you are a keto newbie, don’t let the “There Is Only One True Keto” Food Police scare you away from trying it -- or from trying the tasty recipes in this cookbook as occasional treats to help you along the way. It IS possible to succeed doing things simply, easily, and gently. Rigid rule-following may work for some people, but if you are like me -- and are more of an ease-into-it kind of person, who needs a logically progressing process to achieve long-term sustainable change -- then Urvashi Pitre’s method may be right up your alley. It certainly was for me, and with results beyond what I could have ever imagined when I started. Only you get to decide what kind of keto works for you, so try her advice on for size and see how it fits.Even if you’ve been doing keto/LCHF for a while now, but maybe your version of it means you may only end up making a few recipes from this book -- you too may find it to be money well spent JUST to be able to get your hands on this amazingly well-written, well-explained, masterfully-simplified, to-the-point prose on How To Keto.Based solely on these opening non-recipe chapters, I’ve already bought an extra copy of this book as a gift for someone..While the recipes contain nutritional information on Calories, Total Carbs, Net Carbs, Fiber, Fat, and Protein -- the Sugar Alcohols details are not listed. The publisher’s decision adhere to “industry standards” and omit these details in a specifically-keto cookbook is perplexing. But fortunately for us, the author provided this information in a nifty, downloadable chart. Go to twosleevers (dot) com (slash) cookbooks, scroll to the bottom and lo and behold, there’s a link that says, “Looking for a total macro breakdown chart?”. This link will take you to a printable PDF that clearly lists all of the macros, including sugar alcohols. The availability of this supplemental file is a big bonus -- because now we have an overview chart that makes it super easy to just scroll down the Net Carbs (or Total Carbs) column to find recipes that fit our individual specific carb count needs. (P.S. a quick count through this chart reveals that there are 68 recipes in the cookbook with 5g or fewer net carbs per serving!).A surprisingly large number of recipes have photos in the Kindle version of this cookbook, with the added bonus of having photo captions with the recipe names as clickable links. So it was very easy to scroll through the Kindle version searching for pictures that looked yummy, and then be able to immediately get right to the recipe for most of them. And I’ve already made a few recipes in this cookbook, either via earlier versions from the author’s TwoSleevers blog, or via the 5-recipe-early-preview PDF made available to her Facebook followers who pre-ordered..The Avocado Lime Ice Pops were a surprise win. Creamy, savory, delicious. They are not at all what you have in mind when you think of reaching for an ice pop -- but they are oh so exactly what you want to keep eating after that first taste. I had leftover “mix” after filling my popsicle molds, and I just chugged it and called it a smoothie. Super tasty!.The Peanut Butter Bites somehow magically stay the perfect texture while frozen, which allows them to be eaten without first defrosting! The author’s notes say she stores them in the freezer to keep from eating them all at once (presumably versus keeping them in the fridge). I must warn you that keeping them in the freezer did NOT slow me down one bit! If you like peanut butter, definitely make these. If you REALLY like peanut butter, maybe start with a half-batch if you have self-control concerns. :-).The Strawberries & Cream Ice Cream Bites, on the other hand, DO need a few minutes to defrost and soften before being able to comfortably bite through them. But they are VERY much worth the wait. So much strawberry goodness in perfect little packages. Just don’t let them sit for too long, or you’ll need a spoon to eat them!.The Milky Bears are adorable, and a fun use of pandan extract if you have it (otherwise just use the regular gummy bears variation listed at the end of the recipe -- or maybe try pineapple extract and make pina colada bears!). I found that these actually worked best for me letting them chill overnight in the silicone molds, rather than unmolding when still soft then chilling loose to firm them up (I tried both ways). But I’m gonna be honest here -- unless you have your heart set on bears, just go directly to regular candy/truffle molds. I found their larger-size end-result to make for MUCH easier scooping up a handful to stuff into my face! :-).The No-Cook Ice Cream has been my go-to for a few months now. Because seriously, who can resist dietarily-compliant ice cream ready to inhale in under 30 minutes start to finish? (When my ice cream maker drum has been in the freezer for several days, this recipe is actually done churning for me after a mere 10 minutes!) This recipe is best eaten as soft-serve immediately after churning, because being sugar-free causes it to freeze completely solid just like with commercial versions. So I divide it into individual 1/2 cup storage containers for freezing, which is the right size to let each little portion get soft enough to start eating within just 15 to 20 minutes (plus it provides some much-needed portion control). In addition to plain vanilla, I’ve done this recipe with caramel flavoring, strawberry flavoring -- and once even some spiced chai powder, which was amazing!.Lastly, the Coconut Pandan Chia Seed Pudding -- this one has been a long time favorite, and is a super simple way to get fiber and other nutritional goodies into you in a tasty way via the chia seeds. (Warning -- no matter how tasty, do NOT eat the whole batch all by yourself within a single day! That’s definitely *ahem* “too much fiber” *ahem* #VoiceOfExperience) The key for this recipe is letting the chia seeds soak for a nice long time before continuing with the other ingredients. (I do about 20 minutes using water heated in an electric kettle.) But from there you can use pandan flavoring if you have it, or just use plain vanilla extract. It’s delicious both ways, and I often split the batch so I can do half and half of both flavors. I’ve also done it with almond extract, pineapple extract (for pina colada pudding!), raspberry extract, and strawberry extract. All were well worth the cost of acquiring the individual extracts. If you like to experiment with flavors, I recommend waiting to add the flavoring until the very end though, so you can divide the unflavored pudding up into smaller batches and go to town on multiple flavor mini batches! :-).All in all, I’m super happy with what I’ve seen so far of this cookbook via the Kindle version. (And extra-super-happy with the author’s additional supplemental PDF -- because having that PDF is going to make it soooo easy to decide which recipes I want to try next!)I did also get a print version of this cookbook -- which I will review separately in far more extensive detail. (Spoiler Alert: The full-page photos are GORGEOUS. This may be her most photo-rich cookbook yet!).

Received today, just made the Cinnamon Mug Cake! Great texture and flavor. This is better than cake from a fancy bakery!

This book is beautiful and I’m so excited to try so many of the recipes in here. I have tried the Salted caramel pralines which are to die for and so simple! I love that Urvashi comes up with such easy and straight forward recipes. You won’t be let down!

This latest cookbook from Urvashi Pitre is utterly amazing. She knocks all of her cookbooks and recipes out of the ballpark. This one is destined into the stratosphere!I’ll get to the recipes later. Right now you just have to know that her information about how to do keto in the front of the book is literally worth the price of the book. She has laid out a compilation of guidance, including 4 weeks of how to get started, in the most understandable manner that’s not filled with all the mumbo jumbo I’ve read in other books. It’s in her familiar style of her recipes, #stupidsimple...Easy to read, easy to comprehend and so very easy to follow and reap incredible success. I know from personal experience having lost 80# in 8 months following her guidance and eating like royalty making her recipes. When you get the book, read those initial pages to start you on the best adventure ever. Now about the recipes. OH. MY. GOD! There isn’t a one that doesn’t make my mouth water. I’ve already tried several including the gummi bears (so much fun), the peanut cups, several cakes, chocolate truffles, the scones, pralines and the list goes on and on. Some were Released to those who preordered before the actual release of the book. And oh mercy me, I couldn’t make them fast enough. Everything is just positively delightful. I’ve served friends these sweets and they were astonished when I told them they were keto/low carb. It truly is magical how she can repeatedly surprise and amaze us and create such amazing food. She’s a cooking magician! So, hurry on over and get this book and prepare to be amazed!

I pre-ordered this book a while ago and it was so worth the wait. I absolutely love the pictures. Have made the Buttery Almond Pound Cake and you can't even tell this is 'keto'. The Peanut Butter Bites were super satisfying. Salted Caramel-Pecan Pralines were better than I expected and is currently one of my favorites. Strawberries & Cream Ice Cream Bites taste just like ice cream. I am really looking forward to making my way through this cookbook and sharing with my non-keto friend at work. Actually I am not even on a Keto diet and love this cookbook. I have all of Urvashi Pitre's cookbooks and find all of her books very dependable on fast and simple recipes but oh so tasty!!!

This book is beautiful. I received it yesterday and the power was out last night so haven't made any of the recipes. I already know they will be easy and delicious because all of Urvashi's recipes are. I bought an extra copy for a client who has lost 75 pounds on keto and is now struggling with wanting a sweet treat. I know she will love it. The first chapter, explaining the Keto way of eating is very helpful.

This is much more than just a book of recipes, this also simplifies the keto diet into a brief "Keto for Dummies", that I love! I have several of Urvashi's books,(OK. I have them all, hush) I'm in her Facebook group and she is simply the most real, both as a person and about the diet. She understands that everyone's perfect "keto" diet is a little different than the next because we are all individuals. Oh, and the photos in this book! I haven't even made it all the way through yet and I'm drooling. I cannot wait to bake up a few of these this weekend. I'll try to remember to come back and add some photos!

This book is a lifesaver for keto and low carb the recipes are easy to understand and dont have crazy ingredients you have to hunt for in another world. Finding enough good recipes to keep on track is a must and this book delivers. Thank you for another great book.

Honig writes a very organized book with a clear purpose and provides a good understanding of the multiple facets of the women in the cotton mills. Her book is good for someone who does not have much background knowledge about Chinese history or industrial culture. Yet it is also a worhtwhile read for someone who already has a background in Chinese history, as it provides valubale information about the Green Gang and Communist mobilization. Honig does a good job of examining how women from different backgrounds came to and fit into the Shanghai mill environment.

Once upon a time, long ago and far away, there were precisely seven planets: Moon, Mercury, Venus, Sun, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn, all apparently revolving around a solidly fixed Earth. And then about five centuries ago came Nicholas Copernicus, who invented the solar system. He said the Sun was really in the middle surrounded by six planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth (with Moon), Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. It was truly the Sun’s system, with Earth now a spinning planet. It was all very simple and elegant.   Three centuries after Copernicus, things were no longer so simple. In 1781 another big planet, Uranus, was found, and then a lot of small ones were given names like Ceres, Astraea, Flora, Hygeia, and Kalliope. In 1846, still another big planet, Neptune, gained planetary status. By 1854 there were 41 planets, and astronomers cried “Enough!” So they all decided there were eight large planets, and the little guys weren’t really planets but minor planets.   Today astronomers know that the solar system is much more complex and interesting than anyone dreamed of in the 1850s. There are more than 130 natural satellites, and more are being discovered. One, Saturn’s Titan, is bigger than the planet Mercury. If Titan and our moon had independent orbits, they would qualify as planets. Astronomers now have orbits for nearly 500,000 minor planets, half of which have been assigned numbers, and about 15,000 of which have been given names. Almost all of them are irregularly-shaped rocks, but at least one, Ceres, is massive enough for its gravity to pull it into a sphere, so it is a dwarf planet. And there are the comets, hoards of them in the deep freeze beyond Neptune.   Occasionally some of these huge chunks of dirty ice get nudged into the inner parts of the solar system, where they thaw out and sprout long, beautiful tails. And a few of these ice balls are massive enough to pull themselves into spherical dwarf planets. Pluto is one of these, smaller than our moon. Makemake and Haumea are still smaller, while Eris is a little larger than Pluto. Three of these even have their own satellites. Undoubtedly more of these icy dwarf planets await discovery.   For now, there are eight classical planets and five dwarf planets, making thirteen!   --Dr. Owen Gingerich, Former Research Professor of Astronomy, Harvard and Astronomer Emeritus, Smithsonian Astronomical Observatory

#23,658 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

It gives the best summary I've seen on the latest thinking re: definition and identification of planets. Who knew there were 13 now? Pluto is back in but as a dwarf planet and it has some new dwarf planet friends. My 5 1/2 grandson knew most of the rest of the planetary/solar system information as apparently it is pretty basic but beautifully illustrated. Also includes mythology and historical asides which he did not know, but which actually bring an interesting interdisciplinary element into the study. If your child is really serious about planets and stars, and older than about 7 this may be too basic, but would probably be fine for all others. Is a typically beautifully illustrated National Geographic product and fortunately we enjoy reading it.

Wow! Did I learn a lot! This is the latest information known about the solar system to date. I taught the solar system to elementary students for 36 years and I was amazed at how things have changed. I only retired 6 years ago but it is a though I knew very little. How much fun it would be to teach about Haumer in the Kuiper Belt! Imagine an icy football tumbling end-over-end with a rock inside! And contemplate the "Easterbunny" or Makemake (MAH-keh MAH-keh), the 12th planet from the sun! We can't even imagine how cold it is at -406 degrees F. There is not anything on Earth that we know of that is that cold! See what I mean? It's a new universe out there!

This is such a fun book! My son and I loved the journey all the way from the sun to the 13th dwarf plant, Eris. Some of our favorite facts learned included: Why is Mercury silent? Could life be possible on one of Saturn's moons? Why is Venus considered earth's "evil twin"? How did earth's moon form? Which two planets do scientists think might have diamonds under their clouds?I enjoyed having all the Planetary updates from my elementary school days when Pluto "lost" its planet status and all we had was "My Very Energetic Mother Jumped Straight Up Near"...My son and I finished this book wanting to learn even more about our solar system and wondering about its mysteries.

If your kid is a solar system nut, like ours, this is a great book. He doesn't like that most planet books don't have the dwarf planets, so I was excited for this one. When I told him this book was coming he said "does it show the dwarf planet candidates?" He was so happy they are mentioned too.

This is a good solar system book because it really has the most updated information of any kids book I looked at for this age range. That being said..I don't love the book but it's good enough. I saw another I liked more but it didn't have as much on the dwarf planets. I don't like the way this book is written that much...when closely compared to Our Solar System by Seymour Simon, I think the wording and flow are much better in that book but I went with this one because it seemed to have more diagrams and seemed like it might be more appealing for a 6 year old to peruse on their own. In the end I guess I'd say both would be useful books and I'm sure I'll eventually pick up the Seymour Simon as well. So, I like this book but perhaps as more of a companion with other solar system books.

Absolutely Gorgeous and a very important resource for your classroom.

This is the first book my 9 year old reaches for since it came in the mail last week. She has gone through it on her own and I have gone over it with her too since there are words hard to pronounce and understand at here reading level. While it is a great starter book to intrigue the mind of a child, it does lack in a lot of information, but at least it leads her to more questions. You will need to buy books that are more in depth if you are looking to supplement a science curriculum. She is very happy to have this in our collection.

My 6 year old daughter is super into outer space so I ordered this book hoping it wouldn't be too over her head. It's not but would also be perfect for an older child. She is more into minor/dwarf planets so this book is perfect. The illustrations are gorgeous and plentiful. LOTS of information. In fact we loved it so much we will have order it again as her first copy was covered in old banana after she toted it into kindergarten class to show it off.
