Nothing is more amazing than the human spirit. As a lifetime student of martial arts and the warrior philosophy, I picked up this book on sale. Having read and reviewed numerous survival type books I was not expecting much from this book. Not only was I wrong, I was stunned by how totally fantastic this book was and it is now one of my top ten all-time favorite books. The lessons learned from this book should be part of every educational curriculum. Everyone who is concerned about survival needs to read this book. This includes all military, law enforcement, firemen, and martial artists. In fact, anyone who wants to understand the human spirit needs to read this book. This short review cannot do this book justice. The book is organized into two parts. Part one explains what it takes to survive. It has numerous examples of how people have survived the most drastic and serious of life and death situations. The second part asks, "Are you a survivor? This is where the author asks you to go online and take the "Survivor IQ." I stopped reading this book long enough to register and take the test. I strongly advise you to take the test before reading the rest of part two.Once you have taken the test part two explains what type of survivor you are and what your top three strengths are. The afterword emphasizes the lessons of the survivors club. In conclusion, this is a well-written, entertaining and valuable book for anyone seeking answers to how to win and survive when life throws you a curve ball, no matter what the source. A fantastic read.Rating: 5 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: Predator Hunter: A Warrior's Memoir)

Frankly speaking as a survivor of three Near Death Experiences (NDE), I read this book after the 1st one, and following what I had learned from this book, saved myself a bunch of unnecessary grief on the last two, at shortening the time of my having to experience them. This book and Al Siebert's books are also strongly recommended on this subject. Can't say enough how important this book is, it actually helped me to accept myself as I really am under the facade of my outer personality, look at a Big 5 Personality test / Meyer's Brigg's test for your regular personality. My "Survivor Personality" test Results: Fighter. I actually had initial issues with this set of test results, so I ended up taking the test 2 more times before I realized that it wasn't going to change the results. My issue was that my programming as a "Christian" - made me a bit of a softy with my immediate family and some of my friends, i.e. always be nice to others even when they are violating rules of appropriate conduct and over-reaching into your life, i.e. "turn the other cheek" kind of thing, but they won't stop unless you tell them to take a hike, "the hard way". They will have their opinion of you, but who cares, it's your life right? No more Mr Nice Guy, that guy died by the time of the 2nd NDE.When it comes to dying, or actually not dying in this case, get right with who you are at your survivor core, and then start leveraging some of your natural talents and strengths, this stuff works. Live and Learn, or Get Busy Living or Get Busy Dying......your choice.

The book was interesting, but after being teased in every chapter that at the end I was going to get to take a quiz, I was really ready to try and it and curious to see what kind of survivor I am. DON'T GO TO THE LINK!!! The link only takes you to ads, ads, and more ads. There is no quiz. I feel cheated Why do this to people who paid good money to read your book? What a disappointment. Mr. Sherwood, you at least owe it to your readers to post an explanation. I even found the Ben Sherwood blog, but there was no explanation as to why there is no quiz any more, and no posts since 2009. I would have recommended this book but I am so let down and disappointed that the quiz wasn't available. You shouldn't be charging full price for the book if you're going to abandon the quiz site.

Nothing sugar coated, no moral messages, just facts.... and the facts speak for themselves. I like pragmatic novels without a "message", that let me read the story unadulterated and make up my own mind. So, naturally I loved this chronicle. Read this many times, Given it to family and friends. A must read, wish it was offered in school rooms, high school particularly, to show how strong the human spirit really is. It is not the Superman's of the world who exert great strength, but the average man or woman faced with overwhelming odds who perservers.

Interesting book, but I could not take the Survivor Profiler test on line. His website is loaded with "crapware" as my computer advisor explained to me. I tried to log on from three different browsers. All warned me that there was dangerous maleware associated with this website. Not sure I could recommend this book to anyone.

I picked up this book because I was interested in what makes some people survivors and others, well, not. I got short story after short story with next to nothing in the way of actual science, and too many attributions to faith and God than much else. This book would be great for Christians who'd like a feel-good pseudo-science book. Also - most importantly - it says at the very beginning that you will be able to take some sort of survivor's test to determine what sort of survivor you are. I slogged through this book only to get to the part with the URL with the test...and guess what, guys? That site is dead. Nothing there, it's expired. So all this lead up to...nothing. I can't even finish the book now because the rest of it explores your survivor type. I regret buying and reading this book.

The book was full of plain old common sense. Not much new was provided. VERY disappointed that the website listed in the book, (which is supposed to let you log in and take a survivor profile test), takes you to an advertisement. The test, which is referred to in-depth in the book, is apparently no longer available. I would recommend that no one purchase this book. Without the website, it is pretty much a rip off.

When Harry Became Sally: Responding to the Transgender Moment, by Ryan T Anderson

Review

During this “transgender moment,” a government-enforced tyranny of false presumptions about nature besieges the American family. When Harry Became Sally provides the empirical information needed to refute the transgender suppositions, and―in a most original way―makes historic sense of this social misdirection by noting how the “gender-fluid” pseudo-scientific claims of today’s transgender ideologues derive from dubious arguments previously passed around amongst second-wave feminists. Learn from Ryan Anderson how another craze about the workings of the mind has come to beset American households and put thousands of people at risk. —Paul McHugh, University Distinguished Service Professor of Psychiatry, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. When Harry Became Sally is an eminently readable and insightful guide for all who find themselves perplexed by today’s debates on gender identity. Ryan Anderson’s analysis of the ideas that are fueling the transgender movement, their human costs and their political implications will be a valuable resource for parents, educators and policy makers. —Mary Ann Glendon, Learned Hand Professor of Law, Harvard University, and author of Rights Talk and A Nation Under Lawyers. For an informed and sensitive presentation of gender identity issues, When Harry Became Sally is a must-read book. It is especially a must for those in psychiatry, psychology and counselling. —Paul Vitz, Professor Emeritus of Psychology, New York University, and Senior Scholar, Institute for the Psychological Sciences. I always read Ryan Anderson with great admiration. When Harry Became Sally is an always focused, informative, fair-minded, lucid and fact-based guide to just and reasonable policies in place of government- and corporation-mandated falsification of science, medicine, public records and history; suppression of free speech and family rights; and many-sided, often irreversible injustice to the vulnerable. —John Finnis, Professor of Law & Legal Philosophy Emeritus, University of Oxford. “Do no harm” is a fundamental tenet of medical ethics. But sadly―as shown by Ryan Anderson’s careful examination of the research―people with gender dysphoria are now commonly given treatments that involve grave health hazards and few (if any) lasting benefits. Regardless of political persuasion, all concerned citizens, especially parents, policymakers, and healthcare professionals, should give serious consideration to the evidence presented in this thoughtful and balanced book. —Melissa Moschella, Assistant Professor of Medical Ethics, Department of Medicine, Columbia University. Ryan Anderson forthrightly calls out the suspension of disbelief that has led us into ever more bizarre denials of reality, blindfolding our eyes and our heads in the name of political ideology and ensuring the suffering of the mentally ill. Everyone concerned with the welfare of children should read When Harry Became Sally. —Margaret A. Hagen, Professor of Psychological and Brain Sciences, Boston University. People who experience gender dysphoria deserve to be treated with compassion, kindness, and respect―just like everyone else. It is wrong to despise them, ridicule them, or disrespect them in other ways. As Ryan Anderson shows in his rigorously argued critique of transgender ideology, we can speak and stand up for the truth while loving those who identify as transgender as our neighbors. When Harry Became Sally confirms Anderson’s standing as one of our nation’s most gifted young intellectuals, and without doubt the most fearless. —Robert P. George, McCormick Professor of Jurisprudence, Princeton University. Ryan Anderson takes up the challenging topic of the “transgender moment” in a clear and biologically well-informed manner. He writes in a thoughtful and accessible manner, and he succeeds in his goal of providing “a sober and honest survey of the human costs of getting human nature wrong.” When Harry Became Sally raises important questions for anyone who is sincerely concerned about the wellbeing of those struggling with their gender identity.” —Maureen Condic, Associate Professor of Neurobiology and Anatomy, University of Utah.

An important and timely study of a fascinating but in some ways disturbing cultural development in post-truth America. Among the books many virtues is its rational analysis of the claims made by transgender advocates--mind you, not necessarily transgender people--about the human person, sex, gender, the mind, and personal identity. Anderson debunks the common myth that deferring to a person's sincerely professed sense of self is ALWAYS the morally and scientifically correct course of action. Especially when it comes to kids, evidence that gender transition is the best or only course of action is simply not there. On the contrary, what little we know--and we truly know very little--strongly suggests that caution is required. But given the high stakes of the issue (advocates claiming that merely to question their claims is to encourage kids' suicides), the media attention, the culture war framing, and the intervention of civil rights officials, caution and circumspection are sorely missing. So far as I can tell, there are many denunciations of Anderson as a bigot and symbolic book burnings by trans advocates. What there is not, is a sustained, rational and sincere effort by Anderson's critics to engage his arguments. Not that that matters in America of 2018, where the buzzwords of identity politics ("inclusive," "diversity," "lived experience") trump both clear thinking and civic disagreement. One can only hope that there are at least some open minded people out there who are genuinely interested in hearing the arguments and the evidence before making up there minds as to whether it is a good idea for schools, psychiatrists and the state to urge five year old children to use puberty blocking drugs. Personally, I am as supportive of adult transgender rights like nondiscrimination in employment and housing as I am sickened by the abuse of children at the hands of gender ideologues. Progressives, who live constantly under the fear of the judgment of History, should think long and hard about how History will judge those who are complicit in this crime. If there is one flaw in this book, it is that Anderson does not adequately engage with the issues of transgender rights in employment, housing, healthcare, government services, and the military. In employment for instance, I can think of no good reason why an employer should be allowed to fire or refuse to promote someone simply because they are transgender. Granted, this is not Anderson's topic; but signaling to rational and compassionate critics of trans-kids ideology how these issues differ from one another would have been theoretically important and probably politically prudent.

Thought I'd give the author a try even though I looked him up and knew I differed with him on many issues. The book started out well with information we should all know to try to come up with our own views on this topic. But as the book went on the agenda became clear. Anti feminists, anti marriage and parenting that is not just hetero (hardly touches at all on gay marriage or gay parented families), male/female and preferably christian. He defends Mike Pence and has sexist, anti-feminist views. The agenda is a typical white, male, traditional hetro christian views, so if you are all of that, you'll love seeing a biased book that fits your own views. But if you want to actually learn about the multiple kinds of families, parenting, child rearing, and sexual preferences that actually exist in the world, I suggest you look elsewhere as I plan to do. I read other reviews that voiced doubt that he wrote this book because he felt bad for those who de-transitioned. I also doubt that was the reason. The book clearly has an agenda that the author slowly walks you to, bit by bit, most likely hoping you'll see it his way in the end.

Ryan Anderson sets forth a compelling case about the potential harm of the rush to normalize the transgender movement and the rush to push children into hormone and sex reassignment surgery at a young age. Many have and will criticize his work as that of a transphobe, but that is not the case. He promotes tolerance and compassion for those suffering in this manner and presents well thought out arguments supporting his position.

Clearly written book of the transgender movement, difference between gender identity and sex and societal and medical consequences of misunderstanding the difference.

Based on some of the reviews I was a bit skeptical. However, I found the author’s presentation to be credible, balanced and very informative. This book is an important voice in the conversation.

A timely work, Dr. Anderson patiently and charitably argues for what used to be considered common sense. This book is a fine piece of scholarship.

Addresses the culture movement on gender confusion and thus self determined gender. Helps in an understanding of where our culture is now and hiw the Christian community needs to love, understand and to counsel those buying into this phenomenon.

This is a brilliant, well-researched and well-argued book that urges compassion for those suffering from gender dysphoria and restraint from subjecting vulnerable young children to ill-advised and irreversible procedures to prepare them for the patently IMPOSSIBLE procedure of "sex reassignment!" The reviewers who claim otherwise are either intellectually dishonest, moral imbeciles, or just plain benighted!
