This is a thoroughly-written book. On one hand I was very glad that it didn't turn out to be a pop-economics type of book. On the other hand, I think the book is largely meant for a more academic audience, so I found it very dense to get through. It describes the problem very clearly, and gives a detailed account of the history behind the statistics, which was interesting. What I wish the book had, however, was more help for people who want a way out! It spends 90% of time talking about the problem of statistical significance and the history behind it, but I was already in agreement with them so I didn't need any convincing.I was hoping for more guidance on alternative approaches, or at least more detail on Gosset's thinking and ideas. They make vague references to loss functions, power analysis, etc. as much better approaches, but if you don't know very much about those things you're pretty much on your own to read something else.

Tests of statistical significance are a particular tool which is appropriate in particular situations, basically to prevent you from jumping to conclusions based on too little data. Because this topic lends itself to definite rules which can be mechanically implemented, it has been prominently featured in introductory statistics courses and textbooks for 80 years. But according to the principle "if all you have is a hammer, then everything starts to look like a nail", it has become a ritual requirement for academic papers in fields such as economics, psychology and medicine to include tests of significance. As the book argues at length, this is a misplaced focus; instead of asking "can we be sure beyond reasonable doubt that the size of a certain effect is not zero" one should think about "how can we estimate the size of the effect and its real world significance". A nice touch is the authors' use of the word oomph for "size of effect".Misplaced emphasis on tests of significance is indeed arguably one of the greatest "wrong turns" in twentieth century science. This point is widely accepted amongst academics who use statistics, but perversely the innate conservatism of authors and academic journals causes them to continue a bad tradition. All this makes a great topic for a book, which in the hands of an inspired author like Steven Jay Gould might have become highly influential. The book under review is perfectly correct in its central logical points, and I hope it does succeed in having influence, but to my taste it's handicapped by several stylistic features.(1) The overall combative style rapidly becomes grating.(2) A little history -- how did this state of affairs arise? -- is reasonable, but this book has too much, with a curious emphasis on the personalities of the individuals involved, which is just distracting in a book about errors in statistical logic.(3) The authors don't seem to have thought carefully about their target audience. For a nonspecialist audience, a lighter How to Lie With Statistics style would surely work better. For an academic audience, a more focused [logical point/example of misuse/what authors should have done] format would surely be more effective.(4) Their analysis of the number of papers making logical errors (e.g. confusing statistical significance with real-world importance) is wonderfully convincing that this problem hasn't yet gone away. But on the point "is this just an academic game being played badly, or does it have harmful real world consequences" they assert the latter but merely give scattered examples, which are not completely convincing. If people fudge data in the traditional paradigm then surely they would fudge data in any alternate paradigm; if one researcher concludes an important real effect is "statistically insignificant" just because they didn't collect enough data, then won't another researcher be able to collect more data and thereby get the credit for proving it important? Ironically, they demonstrate the harmful real world effect is of the cult is non-zero but not how large it is ......

I like the authors and generally feel McCloskey's criticisms of the economics profession are both accurate and humorous. I think this book is essentially right about the abuse of statistics in economics and the social sciences more generally but the point is belabored and the delivery is, very often, unnecessarily pretentious. I do think the application of statistics in the social sciences has vastly improved since the publication of this book, whether this book had anything to do with it is a mystery.

My professor was one of the authors who wrote this book. He taught me Economics

Every paragraph in this book is filled with simmering outrage, and every point is made at least twenty times. The main text is 250 pages long; 25 pages would have been much better. The thesis is interesting (and I suppose it might even be important and valuable). But the writing style is so unbearable that I cannot give this book more than 2 stars.

This is an important book with an important message: worry about the size of an effect, not (just) it's statistical significance. Once explained, the idea comes across as very obvious but one that has been missed by whole fields. I wish more would read this book and consider its message before invoking statistics to make major decisions. Certainly something that would have saved a major drug company with which I am familiar. This book will only become more important as data mining and machine learning become more accessible and more interwoven in our lives. Be forewarned and forearmed!

I sympathize with reviewers turned-off by the tone and style of argument in the book. Yet it might be argued that the in-your-face tone and character dramatization are not "beneath the authors" but rather called for by the lowly fashion of science so-far tested. The (strikingly refined and professionally mature) reviewership correctly cite that more emotionally-neutral coverage of the same topics exist. Yet that work has done little to penetrate the dominant norm: third-year, bachelor-degree, applied-intermediate-course significance testing. And anyway, McCloskey's point about oomph goes long beyond the mathematical derivation of the size of a Beta. It is a point that *must* be intuitively argued and broadly applied, less professionals at all levels of research continue to bicker about miniscule empirical effects and their directions when huge residuals or theoretically robust variables stand screaming, elephants in the room. All of that said, yes I would have liked a clearer theoretical treatment in the beginning chapters.

The Alzheimer's Antidote: Using a Low-Carb, High-Fat Diet to Fight Alzheimer’s Disease, Memory Loss, and Cognitive Decline, by Amy Berger

Review

“Magnificent. . . . The Alzheimer’s Antidote harvests our most highly regarded, scientific research to create an empowering, user-friendly game plan that rewrites our health destiny. . . . This is a program for everyone, whether already diagnosed, at high risk, or even if there is no family history of this disease.”--David Perlmutter, MD, author of Grain Brain, #1 New York Times Bestseller (from the Foreword)"There are few things people fear more than cancer, with the possible exception of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease. Not only does AD ultimately cut lives short, it effectively steals who the person 'is' long before they die. Traditional treatment methods have been lackluster at best, but there is hope. The Alzheimer's Antidote is a scientifically sound method of nutrition and lifestyle which combats AD at a molecular level. If you or someone you know suffers from AD, I highly recommend this book."--Robb Wolf, New York Times bestselling author of The Paleo Solution and Wired to Eat“Amy Berger brings a fresh, new perspective to the rising problem of Alzheimer’s disease. She proposes a natural treatment that has, in my opinion, a far greater chance of clinical success than standard medications. The Alzheimer’s Antidote is a terrific book.”--Jason Fung, MD, author of The Obesity Code“Amy Berger elegantly explains how Alzheimer’s, a devastating disease that has touched virtually every American family (or soon will), is much more than just a normal manifestation of growing old, and its management must include much more than just cholinesterase inhibiting drugs. She delves deep into Alzheimer’s as a complex metabolic disease, one that can be greatly reduced, and likely avoided completely, with the right combination of lifestyle modifications within our control. Berger offers comprehensive treatment approaches that go way beyond what most patients are told by their physicians. This book is long overdue and a must-read for health care providers and laypeople alike.”--David M. Brady, ND, CCN, DACBN, author of the Amazon bestseller The Fibro Fix; vice president for health sciences and director of the Nutrition Institute, University of Bridgeport“A growing body of research suggests brain insulin resistance is strongly linked to Alzheimer’s disease (AD). In The Alzheimer’s Antidote, Amy Berger provides a clear understanding of the pathology of AD and explains how a low-carb, high-fat lifestyle can improve cognitive function and increase quality of life by providing an alternate fuel source for the Alzheimer’s brain to use: ketone bodies. This exceptionally well-written, well-researched book is a must-read for family members and caregivers of people with AD.”--Franziska Spritzler, RD, CDE

A fantastic book! I watched Amy's video that I found scientific at a very comfortable level (I am a scientist) so I was wondering about the way the book was going to be written. I must say it is written very similarly to how the video presentation went: pure pleasure, not too low and not too high in style and language. Very enjoyable. While I have not yet finished the book, I grab every minute of wait anywhere to read a page or two, so far my overall impression is that this book should be read by all. One need not have a friend or relative with Alzheimer's to be educated about diabetes mellitus (type 2) leading to Alzheimer's and other health conditions, as well as why scientists searching for the cause of Alzheimer's along the beta amyloid plaques are likely looking at symptom, rather than cause, and why most everyone would benefit from a reduced carbohydrate diet. She also explains how diabetes mellitus starts by insulin resistance of each organ separately rather than the whole body at once--this is known to all doctors and scientists (at least I hope it is known) yet still only the A1C blood test is offered for insulin resistance, which doesn't show any problems until insulin resistance is systemic. Amy also explains how important it is to start eating "right" (low carbs) from early age of 20s and 30s because the changes in the brain/body occur so slowly that by the time symptoms appear, it may be much harder to fix or too late. Prevention is the key.I highly recommend this book for everyone who wants to plan a healthy feature with healthy longevity.

I purchased the paperback version of this amazing book. I have to say that I have honestly NEVER highlighted and annotated a book to this extent EVER. Amy Berger guides us through a tour of the root causes of this disease at a cellular and intracellular level. She does a fantastic job of using just the right amount of humor and provides simple visual analogies to help you understand what would otherwise be a complex subject. I was literally coming to points in the book where I was saying "WOW" out loud. I could not wait to share the information with my wife. The real question is...does it work? IT DOES! My mother in law has vascular dementia and has lived in a memory care facility for two years. She is now back home with us due to the poor care she was given and multiple medication errors. Her short-term memory was completely shot and she was often anxious, fearful, and depressed. She was declining fast both physically and mentally at the facility (which started feeding higher and higher carb meals towards the end). We now have her on a very low carb ketogenic diet. We are also adding MCT oil to various meals (titrated up from 1 tsp to 1 tbsp per day over a couple of weeks). After three weeks the depression and fearfulness are gone. The anxiety is greatly reduced. Today she actually remembered one of her caregivers whom she had not seen in 24 hours (she typically couldn't remember at all). Her countenance is also different and more "alive" and "warm". Her sense of humor is back. Her caregiver see's a definite improvement and is now a believer. She assessed her at a level 4-5 prior to this change in her diet and remarked that she would now assess her as a level 3-4.I am so thankful to Amy Berger for providing this very important and extremely well-written book. There is no doubt in my mind that it will be an invaluable learning resource for the millions of families suffering from any of the various forms of dementia (Alzheimer's). GREAT BOOK!

My mother passed away with no memory and no leg muscles, the result of a double-whammy effect of the officially mandated low-fat, high-carb diet and statin drugs to lower her cholesterol. This experience intensified my search for information on health through nutrition, and in the process I have found out that we have been led down the wrong dietary path for decades. The ghastly effects of this mess we've been eating is appalling, and research is finally catching up.Amy Berger has done an absolutely bang-up job of presenting the most up-to-date information available that demonstrates the dangers of the low-fat, high-carb diet, and conversely, the huge benefits of the reverse- a high-fat, low-carb diet. This book is a very comprehensive work that covers the fallout from eating the way we've been told to eat for decades, how to change all that, and considers the situations that many face including care-givers for those in managed care (nursing homes) and those who prefer a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle. It's one-stop-shopping that combines information available in separate books on some of the basics of nutrition, the cholesterol myth, the dangers of statins, the dangers of the low-fat, high-carb diet and food and cooking recommendations as well as other lifestyle factors.I have read quite a few nutrition/health books over the years, and some are a bit more technical than I can drag myself through, but Amy has presented the information in a way that anyone can understand. Body chemistry is unbelievably complicated, making the processes involved rather difficult to explain, but I found this one easy to understand. I've been known to glaze over and skip to the bottom line at the end of the chapter, but I didn't have to do that with this one. There is some serious myth-busting here. Cholesterol causes heart disease? Busted! Statins for heart health? Busted! Dietary fat makes you fat? Busted! Saturated fats are evil? Busted! We desperately need to shift our thinking where our eating is concerned. Sugar and carb addictions have turned us into people that live to eat rather than people that eat to live. If you want to find out what you can do to save your brain and practical advice on eating to live and staying out of the Alzheimer's unit, get your copy now!

I bought this book as an undergrad thinking about grad school. I wanted to learn more about what career opportunities would come from a PhD in sciences and I wanted to know what I would be getting myself into if I chose that path. This book is packed with great advice for what happens after you're finished with the highest form of formal education there is. Feibelman explains from his own experience (as a physicist), and others' experiences, routes in academia, gov, and industry. He also explains skills that formal education wouldn't necessarily teach you: getting funded, interviews, giving talks, etc. This book showed me a side of academics and the scientific community I hadn't known. And let's just say I didn't know what a postdoc was before I read this. I think the information in this book is invaluable to anyone who has, plans to, or is even considering pursuing a PhD in a science.

I would recommend this book for any PhD student in the hard sciences: Physics, Engineering, Math, Chemistry, etc. It gave me some real insight into what the world of research (industrial or academic) will be like when I graduate with my PhD. If you're just beginning a PhD program, or are considering Masters vs. PhD, this should be must-read material. I'm surprised my universities have not offered a class that covers this type of material, it would be much more useful than the mandatory ethics classes they force you to take. This book seems written for people who have already finished their PhD or are about to graduate very soon. I wish it had more about getting THROUGH the PhD in the first place, but that's too much to ask. This book focuses more on what to expect AFTER your PhD program, although some of the advice on picking an advisor, mentor, and research topic are applicable to anybody. So is the chapter on writing and presentations.

I am currently a graduate student. In a couple years I will be applying to PhD programs. This book had some great suggestions. I definitely feel slightly more confident pursuing a career in research. The book specifically addressed some things that I had some concerns about, specifically establishing yourself as a researcher in a competitive market. The job market will not be very competitive in my area of research, but funding is extremely competitive and big NIH research grants are extremely rare. I now have a better sense of direction.

I am currently pursuing my PhD and devoured this book. A PhD Is Not Enough is full of practical, useable advice and information. This book takes the reader through finding an advisor, giving presentations and seminars, teaching loads, postdoc job considerations, publishing papers, everything. The author's background in physics is close enough to my own field that every insight into graduate school and the subsequent career path translates into my own experience nicely. Dr. Feibelman gives a great rundown of the motivations of professors you may choose to work with during the various stages of their own careers and how that will affect their students for better or worse. Topics such as what sorts of projects to take on during your postdoc position, pros and cons of university labs verses government labs, obtaining funding, setting up your own lab or research area, and what interviewers are looking for prove very helpful insights into academia and will allow the student better preparation for each stage. It's a quick read, insightful, with an honest look at the sometimes contradictory forces of the academic environment. I highly recommend this book for anyone pursuing PhD and pursuing a scientific career.

This book is extraordinarily valuable for anyone with a doctoral degree in the natural or social sciences (Although the author is a physicist, I found his advice transferred very easily to my experiences in the social sciences, and is far better than similar books by social scientists. I only wish this book had been available when I was a grad student). The author is concise; he says what needs to be said and leaves out the fluff. I strongly disagree with those reviewers who said his advice was common sense. If that were true, then why do so many intelligent students fail to follow these guidelines and end up dropping out, struggle in dysfunctional environments, or in some way fail to reach their potential? I found his advice to be rich and rewarding, and what he said frequently described the people I saw every day when I was a grad student. The fact that he refers to "overhead foils" is trivial and does not mean the book is outdated; the advice is not outdated by any means. Not everyone sees things the same way or has the same experiences, and I am sure there are other viewpoints, and one should always seek out a variety of opinions, but the author has a viewpoint that one should not miss. A short book, but one that is worth its weight in gold.

I read this to see whether to recommend it to graduate and undergraduate students in the sciences that attend my university. The author is a well-credentialed scientist at Sandia National Laboratory. There are many opinions presented that people considering or attempting a career in scientific research should know. Interviews, preparing talks, choosing what to publish and how, research plans, weighing various career options - all these topics are addressed. Some opinions differ from mine, most notably his preference for government labs like his over universities, but common sense generally prevails. The prose was vaguer than I prefer, much of it seemed obvious, perhaps because I've already been there. A few times it was obvious this dates to 1993.Overall, I prefer the book Academeology (google it) by "Female Science Professor", which nails the university life with much greater accuracy and precision. Aspiring scientists should really read both, and go into their careers with their eyes open.

Awesome and surprising little book. No one would have guessed that H.M. The Prince of Wales, aka Charles, was capable of such creativity, at moments almost irreverent anf extremely funny. Be prepared for a good laugh with this book. Too bad this is his only book penned in this stile. A must in my humble opinion in every library.

Must have to be Scottish to like it.

I lost my original copy and have been looking for a replacement for quite some time. I didn't think I would find it so easily.

I have started reading this to my son. It is such a good childrens book. It is a fun way to bring some of my culture to my son

What a pleasant story to read to children.

sweet little book'

The Idea of Phenomenology is Volume VIII of the recent Husserl's Collected Works Series published by Kluwer. This small text consists of five short lectures (and some immediate post-lecture reflections) given by Husserl in 1907. These lectures represent the first public exposition of his phenomenology and are reminiscent of Descartes' Meditations - in that Husserl grapples with the question of knowledge. Lee Hardy's new English translation is generally clear and readable. Although probably for a limited readership, I recommend it for fans of Husserl and readers interested in the origins of phenomenology.

Edmund Gustav Albrecht Husserl (1859-1938) was a German philosopher who established the school of phenomenology. He was born into a Jewish family (which later caused him to lose his academic position when the Nazis came to power in 1933), but was baptized as a Lutheran in 1886. He wrote many books, such as Ideas: General Introduction to Pure Phenomenology,On the Phenomenology of the Consciousness of Internal Time,The Crisis of European Sciences and Transcendental Phenomenology,Cartesian Meditations, etc.He says in the first lecture, “The METHOD of the critique of cognition is the phenomenological method, phenomenology as the general doctrine of essences, within which the science of the essence of cognition finds its place. What sort of method is this? How can a science of cognition be established if cognition in general, what cognizing means and can accomplish, is questioned? What method can here reach the goal?... Right away we become dubious whether such a science is at all possible. If it questions all cognition, every cognition chosen as a starting point is questioned. How then can it ever begin?” (Pg. 1-2)He notes, “The genuinely immanent … is taken as the indubitable just on account of the fact that it presents nothing else, ‘points’ to nothing ‘outside’ itself, for what is here intended is fully and adequately given in itself… So… the first step toward clarity is now this: the genuinely immanent… the adequately self-given, is beyond question. I may make use of it. This which is transcendent … I may not use. Therefore, I must accomplish a phenomenological reduction: I need to exclude all that is transcendentally posited.” (Pg. 3-4)He suggests, “as soon as we begin to reflect on the correlation between cognition and reality … there arise difficulties, absurdities… which drive one to the admission that the possibility of cognition as far as its reaching the object is concerned is an enigma. A new science, the critique of cognition, is called for. Its job is to resolve confusions and to clarity the essence of cognition… In the beginning no cognition can be assumed WITHOUT EXAMINATION…it must rather base itself on the cognition which is immediately evident and of such a kind that, as absolutely clear and indubitable, it excludes every doubt of it possibility and contains none of the puzzles which had led to all the skeptical confusions.” (Pg. 25-26)In the third lecture, he states, “It is also clear that the cognitions present a sphere of absolutely immanent data; it is in this sense that we understand ‘immanence.’ In the ‘seeing’ pure phenomena the object is not outside cognition or outside ‘consciousness,’ while being given in the sense of the absolute self-givenness of something which is simply ‘seen.’ But here we need assurance through epistemological reduction, the methodological essence of which we now want to examine in concreto for the first time. We need the reduction at this point in order to prevent the evidence of the existence of the cognition from being confused with the evidence of the sum cogitans, and the like.” (Pg. 33)He summarizes, “Basically what I am saying amounts to this. The ‘seeing’ or grasping of what is given, insofar as it is actual ‘seeing,’ actual self-givenness in the strictest sense and not another sort of givenness which points to something which is not given---that is an ultimate. That is ABSOLUTE SELF-EVIDENCE; if you are looking for what is not self-evident, what is problematic, or perhaps entirely mysterious, consider the reference to something transcendent, i.e., intention, belief, even a detailed proof of something not given. And it does not help us that even here an absolute datum can be found---the givenness of intention and belief themselves. To be sure, if we only reflect we will find this before us; but what is given here is not what was intended.” (Pg. 39-40)He explains, “Let us now consider some cases in which a universal is given, i.e., cases where a purely immanent consciousness of the universal is built up on the basis of some ‘seen’ and self-given particular. I have a particular intuition of redness, or rather several such intuitions. I stick strictly to the pure immanence; I am careful to perform the phenomenological reduction. I snip off any further significance of redness, any way in which it may be viewed as something transcendent, e.g., as the redness of a piece of blotting paper on my table, etc. And now I fully grasp in pure ‘seeing’ the MEANING of the concept of redness in general… the universal ‘seen’ as identical in this or that. No longer is it the particular as such which is referred to, not this or that red thing, but redness in general. If we really did this in pure ‘seeing,’ could we then still intelligibly doubt what redness is in general, what is meant by this expression, what it may be in its very essence?... Could a deity, an infinite intellect, do more to lay hold of the essence of redness than to ‘see’ it as a universal?” (Pg. 44-45)He concludes, “we find evidence in the universal; we recognize that universal objects and states of affairs attain self-givenness. And they are unquestionably given in the same sense; hence they are adequately self-given in the strictest sense of the term. Hence phenomenological reduction does not entail a limitation of the investigation to the sphere of genuine… immanence, to the sphere of that which is genuinely contained within the absolute this of the cognitio.” (Pg. 48)He further says, “Thus as little interpretation as possible, but as pure an intuition as possible… And the whole trick consists in this---to give free rein to the seeing eye and to bracket the references which go beyond the ‘seeing’ and are entangled with the seeing, along with the entities which are supposedly given and thought along with the ‘seeing,’ and, finally, to bracket what is read into them through the accompanying reflections. The crucial question is: Is the supposed object given in the proper sense? Is it… ‘seen’ and grasped, or does the intention go beyond that?” (Pg. 50-51)This brief book, though “early” in Husserl’s career, contains some of his clearest explanations of his ideas; it will be very helpful to persons studying Husserl and phenomenology.
