This was an imaginative and well written tale, but after the first hundred pages or so I skipped to the end to see how it all turned out and pitched the book. It was very slow moving and the politically correct jabs that were so out of place and so often repeated got old and annoying really quickly. I just wanted to read a good ghost story, and this had the potential to be such, but I certainly didn't want to be force fed the author's personal beliefs.
I'm a sucker for a good ghost story, and April A. Taylor's The Haunting of Cabin Green sucked me in from the first page. Opening with a near-accident on a fog enshrouded road in the woods, the novel moves from the literal landscape fog to plumb the depths of the metaphorical fog of memory, history, and grief. What impressed me with this novel is both its attention to Gothic atmosphere and its examination of grief, loss, and depression.I enjoyed the non-linear narrative, the way Taylor sutures events from the past with the ongoing story of Ben, the central character, as he visits a remote cabin in the woods hoping to find time to reflect on the death of his fiancee. But, as with all great Gothic tales, that inward turn to self examination leads to a slow invasion of the paranormal into the "real" world.I read this book in one sitting, staying up late into the dark night and frequently pausing to listen for sounds in my home and fighting the urge to turn on all the lights. If you're a fan of ghost novels like Harvest Home, The Haunting of Hill House, or A Winter Haunting, you will love this one!
The Haunting of Cabin green was a novel that instantly caught my attention and from the very first page I could tell I was in for a literary treat. Exceptionally written and beautifully descriptive you will find yourself inside the Cabin Green in no time. The author does a wonderful job of pulling you in and keeping you hooked. I literally couldn't put it down, and I finished it the same day I started. Eerie and filled with angst you are in for a journey like no other, a true psychedelic horror experience that will leave you wanting more. It is written so intelligently that the very plot may leave some who are not well versed in abstract twist endings confused and wanting. Fans of films like The Secret Window or perhaps The Black Swan would enjoy the artistic psychological nature of the book that makes you question the main characters sanity up until the very end when all is revealed. I enjoyed a lot of the social aspects of the novel and found it to be very progressive and with the times as well. A true modern horror classic in the making, I'd suggest it to anyone! Can't wait to read the authors new title Missing in Michigan which I'm sure will meet every expectation I have for a well written book!
If a horror novel is going to truly reel me in, I need characters I care about, deep and vibrant descriptions to get me in the macabre mood and a strong story line that makes me want to invest my time into. THE HAUNTING OF CABIN GREEN has all of this and more.What Taylor does so great in this debut novel is ramp up the emotional weight while also injecting the perfect amount of suspense-building dread, without sacrificing the quality of the story or character development. It's easy to get too wordy or lose yourself in a novel as an author, but Taylor handles this one fantastically.As a reader, I’m a huge fan of description and Taylor makes sure you can see, smell and taste every piece of this novel. The visuals I got from this book are some of the more stark imagery I’ve enjoyed while reading in quite some time. Think Anne Rice meets Ambrose Bierce. Like any self-respecting ghost story, of course there’s a surprise to the ending. For the sake of being a spoiler-free review, I can only suggest that you pick this one up for your Kindle or bookshelf as soon as possible. Taylor doesn’t pull any punches and she refuses to play it safe in her debut novel, something that the horror genre could use a lot more of.
Ben's fiancee has recently died in a car accident and it overcomes him with remorse. He goes to "Cabin Green" to heal from this tragedy. The author does an excellent job of moving from one time frame to the next. The reader learns about Ben's dysfunctional family, his mother's mental illness, his poor relationship with his father, and the deep love for Kyra who is his fiancee. I liked the ending.It well describes the horror scenes, but there were too many such scenes which is the reason I gave it 4 stars.
This horror story takes you on Ben’s vacation where he hopes to get a grip on the grief over his fiance’s death. He heads to a cabin he and his friends share. Strange things begin to happen that have him questioning his sanity, literally. Is it paranormal or is he insane?I enjoyed the concept of this story, and the author’s ability to describe his surroundings enabled me to picture the cabin in the woods, Ben boating and swimming on the lake, and sitting outside the small-town laundry and grocery store. I did not get a thrilling, psychological feel, though, and I kept waiting for things to “come together.â€
My daughter gave up about 1/3 in, while I skimmed through the last half and even then it was just...so..noooooooope. Really tried to finish but, when I resort to just skimming through, something's gone horribly wrong.
The strengths of this novel are evident from the beginning. The author has a mastery of atmosphere and setting that pulled me in immediately. The swift and yet poetic prose somehow seems both modern and vintage simultaneously. A haunting tale of madness and soul-shattering grief, this novel is a feast of evocative and exquisite gothic horror. Highly recommended!
