#342,650 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

If you've read most or all the major books dealing with British bands/performers from the important years from the 50's, 60's, and 70's, this neat little book should be your next read. This gets four "stars" for using firsthand accounts only and including anecdotes (in each writer's own words) from across the most important eras of British music. Plus with the onslaught of time, a number of these people have either passed on or are (like all of us) getting closer to that time. That makes what they saw and heard that much more important--these were musically and culturally important times--that will never be repeated anywhere near the same way.Probably the most important point of this book is that everything here is written by the actual person who witnessed the event. There's no secondhand stories from "reliable sources". Each event is told by someone who either witnessed or was actually involved in the event. Across this book you'll read tales from musicians, managers, agents, DJs, roadies, producers, music publishers, journalists, label executives, and so on. And you'll read about many famous bands/musicians from a different vantage point. Many of the major players are here, and the insights from these anecdotes are pretty refreshing to read. This is another side of the music business that most of us will never see or hear about. These anecdotes aren't in chronological order and each one is about two pages long. And each person relates something worthwhile. These telling anecdotes are by turns funny, poignant, or sad. But they're told in a straight fashion leaving the reader to form his own conclusions. The book can be read from beginning to end, or can be browsed, picking and choosing at will what looks interesting. The pieces are in the individual writer's own words, and read like you're siting down with them over lunch (or a "refreshment" of some kind) listening to a funny, sad, slightly wistful, or slightly dirty anecdote. You'll read about many famous musicians here--like when John Lennon had tea with Fred Astaire in L.A., or one writer's amusing "meeting" with Syd Barrett, or a music publisher's ultimately sad dealings with Barrett--"He came and stood on the corner three or four days a week for hours on end, just staring at my office for months, and then he disappeared." Or a musician's remembrance of a very young (15 or so) Jimmy Page being driven home after gigs until Page wanted to quit the band. So he brought a new guitarist in to fill his slot--Jeff Beck--who this musician thought "was rubbish and gave him ten shillings to go home." Or what Dusty Springfield said (in no uncertain words) to a promoter and then his wife, that got her banned forever from his string of halls. Or journalist Keith Altham's (self-proclaimed infamous) idea (to Hendrix manager Chas Chandler) for Jimi Hendrix to light his guitar on fire for the first time, and the ensuing pandemonium. And (the late) Big Jim Sullivan's piece on early British r'n'r, including referring to his guitar, "In the early days I was the first one to bring in solid." And "That's what's (sic) they used to call us guitarists, Big Jim Sullivan and Little Jimmy Page." And that's just for openers.Throughout this great, fun to read book are many small insights into that period of British music--from the skiffle age, through jazz, beat, rock, etc., and into the early 80's--and each one adds another interesting and informative piece of the musical puzzle of British music during the most important years of the 50's/60's/70's. The book stops in the early 80's because as the author said, music stopped being so very important to English youth and culture, and "after the first forty years I must admit the interest wanes a bit." But what's here is very readable, interesting, informative in small yet important ways, and just plane fun to read. Taken together these pieces give the reader a closer, more personal look into the music scene at the time, and add up to a somewhat parallel historical addendum to British music. And too this collection of anecdotes also represents a seemingly more innocent, simple time in Britain, and combined with each writer's own words you come away with a bit of the feel for those times. This is part nostalgia (for those of us who can still remember those times) and part small history lesson of some of the most important and influential artists of the era (s).If the years beginning in the 50's through the 60's and 70's (mostly) of all types of British music intrigue you, you should check out this cool little book. There's no photos except for the cool looking period poster-style cover, but the anecdotes are well worth reading. Personally I've wondered if someone would ever publish a book like this, and now it's here. I only wish there would be a second volume--no doubt there are many more first person anecdotes out there equally as good as these. This book should be in every person's library who takes a deep interest in the subject. There's no earth-shattering observations, just first hand anecdotes told in a straight, matter of fact fashion by the people who were there. A small "sleeper" of a book that more deep music fans should pick up on.

Rock History is a website, dedicated to collecting anecdotes from everyone in the British music business from the 1950’s to the 1990’s. As well as a great range of CD’s, they have also produced two books – “The Missing Charts”, which looks at record sales from the 1940’s onwards and this book of interviews and anecdotes, “Over Under Sideways Down,” which collects the stories and memories from musicians, road managers, record promoters, music journalists, concert promoters and virtually anyone associated with the world of music from the early fifties onwards. This is a great collection to either dip into or read cover to cover, with recollections – some fascinating, others enlightening and many simply hilarious.Just about everyone is mentioned in this book and they all behave much as you would expect. So, Rod Stewart does not turn a hair when he enters his room with a young lovely to find one of his crew duct taped to his bed, John Lennon conducts an interview with Keith Moon cavorting on the balcony, a promoter discovers the reason why he had no problem collecting debts for ten years was due to the Krays, we discover the background behind the infamous Troggs tape and hear of a strange meeting with Syd Barrett, amongst many of the stories in this book. Think of a name – Larry Parnes, Derek Taylor, Joe Meek, Brian Epstein, Mick Jagger, Jimmy Page, Gene Vincent – they are all here and many more.Much of the book, although certainly not all, takes place in the early years of rock and roll. One of the things about the early music scene in England was how accessible people were. So many people seem to have got an entrance into the music business by answering an ad in the newspaper or hanging out in cafes near Tin Pan Alley. Of course, people can look back with glasses that are rose tinted, but a lot of these stories are such fun and it’s lovely to read them. Great fun for anyone who is interested in the British music scene – from Lonnie Donegan to Kylie Minogue – you will find something here which will make you laugh and possibly bring back memories.
