This masterworks collection contains the second half of the original ms marvel series, two issues that had been in the works when the book was cancelled but found there way to another anthology book, and the various avengers material associated with Carol. Now, the avengers stuff is really messed up. Carol is basically hypnotized and raped, with the avengers going baby crazy as Carol literally gives birth to her rapist. As bad as that is, the later stuff does give Carol the chance to bring all this up to the avengers, who just feel sad for abit before declaring it all a learning experience. The actual ms marvel issues, while good, are not as memorable. We do see the debut of carols most recognizable costume, the black and yellow one piece suit, which I like a lot more than her original suit. I also like her meeting with captain marvel, but other than that it's fairly standard stuff for superhero comics. The art is also quite good, the "lost issues" that found a home in another book aren't quite as good as the main series in that regard, but its not a massive downgrade.

The original character wraps up her story arc here so if you buy both volumes you'll have it all; even in 2016 it's not a common thing for graphic art readers to get a complete plot- usually only fragments are reprinted- even with shorter run series. In this case you can have it all if you like the character and feel it's worth the cash for the number of pages you get. Written in a different time and a different style of art and theme than most of the recent books out there.

Great read!

This is the second and last Ms. Marvel masterwork. The book straddles the cancellation of the Ms. Marvel title in 1979 so the reader might be forgiven for thinking this might be weak stuff if it got the book cancelled. While in fact, it's not outstanding material it's still high quality stuff. I think it's fair to say that the demographics of the comic book readership was more responsible for the book's cancellation than the writing of Chris Claremont or the artwork of Jim Mooney and successors.Claremont was clearly putting some serious effort into this book but one gets the impression that a number of changes were driven by soft sales. The firing from the editorship of "Woman" magazine seemed ill considered to me. A fine, if underused, supporting cast had been built up and now it was unceremoniously discarded. The change of costume, although an improvement, smacked of desperation as did the killing of her psychiatrist/boy friend (not exactly the same impact as Gwen Stacy's death). I also think that Claremont put off the development of a Ms. Marvel rogues gallery for far too long. All that said, the stories are really entertaining. Only the two part "lizard people" arc was sub-par as Claremont relies too heavily on his "mind control" panacea to resolve the conflict. The artwork is more of a mixed bag (a revolving door of artists does not help a struggling title) but Mooney and Cockrum are great, Infantino and Vosburg much less so. Having just finished the Supergirl Omnibus it is interesting to compare Mooney 20 years apart. After the Ms. Marvel title proper ends we get two issues of Marvel Super-Heroes that were stillborn issues of Ms. Marvel not published until the '90s. Then we get to the very controversial Avengers #200. Easy to criticize in retrospect but it is by no means "garbage" as Kelly Sue DeConnick says in her introduction. It's not a great story by any stretch but it's not garbage. The story relies too heavily on rushed exposition so that the intended "winning her" became indistinguishable from "raping her". Avengers Annual #10 was intended to get Marvel off the hook of taking rape far too casually and as DeConnick says, does it about as well as could be done with more help from Claremont's mind control plot crutch. The book concludes with the moving story of Ms. Marvel (then Binary but still Carol Danvers) learning of the death of Captain Marvel and the implications for her own life.Extras are generous. There are house ads and a feature from the fanzine, FOOM. There is also the aforementioned introduction by Kelly Sue DeConnick.Highly recommended. While not the peak of '70s quality by any means it's still very entertaining stuff but female leads have a tough row to hoe. As a collection it's really superb; the Carol Danvers/Ms. Marvel story is brought to an uneven, abrupt, and controversial conclusion but it's all here. Avengers Annual #10 has been reprinted in the X-Men masterworks previously, it now has appeared in the Ms. Marvel masterworks, and in a few years we'll read it again in the Avengers masterworks.

Yes this volume does include the Avengers #200 which has abduction, rape and incest in it. But it does also include some other fun and entertaining stories from Chris Claremont. This book is over 300 pages of content starting in 1978 with issues of Carol Danver's own title Ms. Marvel #15 through #23. Plus what would have been issues #24 and #25 which was printed 13 years later in Marvel Super-Heroes #10 and #11 (1992) then a few pages of Carol Danners related material from Avengers #197 to # 199. Then the very controversial Double Sized Avengers #200. Followed by Claremont's response which is another double sized issue, Avengers Annual #10 (1981). Finally we get a story from 1986's Marvel Fanfare #24.The restoration and reproduction are excellent. Kelly Sue DeConnick , current writer of Carol Danvers adventures provides a disappointing Introduction. While it was interesting, I would much prefer some historical insight from the creators. Chris Claremont would have been my pick since he wrote over 90% of this volume.Ms. Marvel #15 and #16 lead off this volume with a two part Tiger Shark story from Chris Claremont and Jim Mooney. Wundarr guests in the first part , while Avengers The Beast and Scarlet Witch in the second part.Ms Marvel #17 and #18 is another two parter from Claremont and Mooney. This time the villian is called Centurian and the entire roster of Avengers show up in the second part.Carmine Infantino does the art for Ms. Marvel #19 which is a meeting between Carol Danvers and the Kree Captain Marvel. Ronan the Accuser and Supremor are also featured. This story also takes a look at Carol's childhood and we find out how she was unfairly treated by her chauvinist father.Since the book was demoted to bi-monthly status with #19 Dave Cockrum takes over with Ms Marvel #20 with the hopes he can maintain a bi-monthly schedule. The first thing Cockrum does is redign her costume getting her of the goofy scarf and adding the sash and higher boots and gloves.Claremont and Cockrum two part story ran in Ms Marvel #19 and #20. The story takes place in New Mexico and involves numerous evolved creatures.Well for whatever reason Cockrum still was able to continue. The next four issues then are the work of artist Mike Vosburg. Vosburg's first issue is Ms Marvel #22 which brings back her nemesis DeathBird.Ms Marvel #23 ends up being the last regular issue. A female astronaut friend of Carol's returns in this story which brings back The Faceless One from Astonishing Tales #2. The story also guests Vance Astro of the Guardians of the Galaxy.Marvel Super-Heroes #10 (1992} is up next and it includes the entire story and even the cover intended for Ms Marvel #23 is included. Sabretooth breaks loose and Ms Marvel must recapture him. Iron Man guest stars.Marvel Super-Heroes #11 was started for Ms Marvel #24 by Claremont and Vosburg. Simon Furman either finished scripting it or wrote a new ending for it since it ends with Carol as Binary. The story also features the cold blooded murder of Carol's former boyfriend by Rogue. For some reason, that I totally disagree with Marvel decides to break the story apart and not print the last five pages to after Avengers #200.Next up is a few pages from Avengers #197 through #199 which feature Ms Marvel joining the team and her super accelerated mystery pregnancy. Followed by the very controversial Avengers #200 which is double sized issue. This issue was plotted by Jim Shooter, George Perez, Bob Layton and David Micheline. Perez pencilled the story and Micheline scripted the story. Not sure exactly who came up with the plot and whether they intentionally came up with this sick concept or just didn't think it through.Anyways the bottom line is Carol Danvers is abducted by Marcus (Son of Immortus ) brain washed, raped and then is impregnated with Marcus himself. Then Marcus matures in a matter of days and it ends with Carol going off to live with her son (incest) who abducted and abused her. This is played out to be a happy ending. After last five pages of that before mentioned we get Avengrs Annual #10 done by the team of Chris Claremont and Michael Golden. This is clearly Claremont's response to the other story. Ms Marvel returns but spends time with X-Men now instead. When questioned by the Avengers she gives them "heck" for their despicable treatment of her. The Avengers battle the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants in the main story. We conclude with a short Binary story from Marvel Fanfare #24 ( 1986) by Claremont and David Ross. While I didn't like the way they split up the one story and I detested what they did to Carol in Avengers #200. I still really enjoyed the bulk of the stories and think Claremont had a real handle on the character.
