My wife loved it, perfect Birthday present for an artist dog lover. Problem is our dog loved the book too, just be prepared for that.
I do believe that I have finally found a book - and maybe an author - as weird as I am. I completely loved this illustrated book. Not only does it provide a story about a "Beloved Dog," just like my boy who I have been grieving for the last 2 months, but it also includes parts of the author's many other works. Every piece is quirky, funny, slightly off in lovely ways, superbly illustrated, and lovingly constructed. I felt such love for my beloved dog as I read this book. It is not the usual kind of book that helps you deal with the grief of losing your beloved best friends, but it gives you a different point of view and it will appeal to those of us who are strange enough to respond to it.
Dogs have always been very integral to my existence. From being scared of them to loving them unconditionally, life has come a long way. They are there, always, playing a role in some way or the other, dispensing wisdom in their own way and ensuring that they never let you know. Kalman picks on these qualities of dogs and talks about them through illustrations, her life, the dogs she has encountered and how they have featured in almost every book of hers.“Beloved Dog†is a dedication to our canine friends all over the world. The book is of course as usual beautiful illustrated and that is what makes it so special are her personal thoughts on dogs and how she got about getting one even though she had grown up getting scared of them.It all started when her husband passed away and a dog came into their lives (her children and hers) and changed everything for them. First, the hardcopy edition is beautiful. I love touching the dog on the cover more than an adult should. I tumbled upon this book just after I lost my beloved dog. I have read it multiple times and still sob. My beloved dog, who I insist was unique among all beings in the known universe for being the most kind, the most loving, the most sensitive...turns out to have been a dog. And dogs have perfected the art of being, well, perfect. Maira's wise, funny, tear-provoking words and art wrap a tender heart, and help those with broken tender hearts know that another kindred spirit knows more than most what the particular loss feels like.

Beautiful illustrations with a heart-touching story line. Think of it as a children's book for grownups. I keep it by my bed and just look at the pictures some nights.

I love dogs and Maira Kalimantan...so this is the perfect combo. This book is true to her work, funny, moving, somewhat stream of consciousness rather than ploddingly coherent. It is absolutely lovely.
