I bought this book to see how the author explains strokes to children, since my son is a stroke survivor. While the content is good, I am completely disappointed with page 21 in which the author has the grandpa yelling, "hey fatty" to someone walking by. While this may have been a first hand experience for the author it is not appropriate for children. You can't rip that page out without losing the content on the next page. Time to get out the black sharpie. Disappointed.
There is very little literature on this topic for kids. I bought two books, this is one of them. My mom had a stroke a couple of months ago and we didn't know how to talk about it with our son. The book looks totally like a childrens' book, which makes it very friendly. I had bought another booklet but its presentation wasn't quite as nice as this one from the presentation point of view. Illustrations are nice and it explains fairly well the situation. I think compared to the other one this one doesn't go too deep into the recovery process, which at the end is what one has to go through for a long period of time after the stroke and it would be very helplful to be able to explain in more detail and that it doesn't happen quite as fast as one would like. Overall, it was a very helpful book.
Beautifully written, engaging story. Appropriate for kids in grades K-4.The "hey fattie" line the other reviewer mention was an example that stroke victims sometimes lose control of what they say.
This book is geared to school age children and younger. It is a sweet story about a boy and his grandpa. It definitely deals with realities of a stroke and how it affects a family. My husband had a major stroke and we have 3 and 5 year old grandchildren. It was a perfect story for them and there are helpful hints on pages in the back of the book that guide you in what to say to your kids. I would highly recommend this book.
